Nokia 6680 WCDMA/GSM review

In the smartphone market among the platforms used, the undisputed leadership belongs to the Series 60 platform (one of their add-ons to the Symbian OS core), largely due to the successful sales of Nokia smartphones. Smartphones from Panasonic are much less important for this platform, Samsung will be an important player in the future. The Window Mobile platform is gradually gaining momentum, it is rapidly increasing its market share. Behind it are companies such as Motorola, Samsung, LG, Pantech, HP, Dell, and operators (HTC products manufactured under operator brands). These platforms will seriously compete for market leadership starting in the second half of this year. Nothing threatens the position of the Series 60 for at least another year, it will remain the leader, but this leadership will cease to be absolute. The trendsetter on the Series 60 platform will remain Nokia, and on the Windows Mobile side, the Taiwanese company HTC.

Nokia announced the Nokia 6680 in February this year at the 3GSM congress, you could read about it in a special report from the exhibition. Two more models were announced at the same time – Nokia 6681/Nokia 6682. Their differences are in the lack of support for 3G (and all related services) and the front VGA camera, they are designed for markets where third-generation communication is not available and is not planned in the near future.Case colors differ, the difference of 2 g in weight cannot be considered significant, another version of the Symbian core, everything else is the same. The Nokia 6681 and 6682 models differ in the lower frequency range – these are GSM 900 and GSM 850 (for the US market), respectively, this is the only difference. The appearance of the Nokia 6638 (a CDMA variant of the Nokia 6630 with minor changes in functionality and design) suggests that the same fate awaits the Nokia 6680 (the CDMA model will be called, for example, Nokia 6688). The company segments the offer, different models appear in different markets, adapted to specific networks available in a particular region. This approach is justified, it allows you to maximize the audience, pursue a flexible pricing policy, without fear of the gray market.

The recent announcement of Nokia's N-series smartphones clearly demonstrates the company's approach – the lack of a flagship, a model that would combine maximum functions. After all, the release of such a model would automatically reduce the sales of other similar products that differ in one or two functions. Model N91 – built-in hard drive, built-in Wi-Fi, but the old screen. Nokia N90 – new high-resolution screen, but no built-in drive and Wi-Fi. Nokia N70 – no Wi-Fi, no new screen, but compared to the Nokia 6680, a 2 megapixel camera and FM radio have been added.

The Nokia 6680 is a redesigned version of the Nokia 6630, built on the same hardware platform. Let's start discussing the differences with the design. The model is available in two colors – Light Bronze and Blue Silver (for Nokia 6681 colors – Electric Blue, Pearl White, Light Silver). Unlike the Nokia 6630, the contour of the body has a classic rectangular symmetrical pattern with rounded corners, there is no extension at the bottom (the so-called "ears" of Nokia 6630). The rows of keys are arranged in terraces, arcuately. They are sandwiched between two vertical rows of silver side keys. In our opinion, the design is successful, mature, one of the best among smartphones without a touch screen. Those who found the Nokia 6630 unacceptable in terms of design will pay attention to the Nokia 6680. As smartphones take an increasing place in the company's product line, their appearance will become more seasoned. Models Nokia 3230, Nokia 6680, Nokia N70 are examples of this.

Other differences between the model and Nokia 6630, which will be gradually revealed in the review:

  • Classic design (described above)
  • 262 thousand colors
  • Active camera slider, front camera, flash
  • Slightly better video quality
  • Push to talk
  • Active Standby add-on, similar to the Today screen on Windows Mobile

The body material is expensive, pleasant to the touch plastic. You can read about problems with build quality in the first batches in the corresponding chapter of the review, we will not focus on them here. Over time, most likely, these problems will be solved, the production process will be adjusted.

The phone's dimensions are typical for Nokia smartphones (108.4×55.2×20.5 mm), weight is 133 g (Nokia 6681/6682 – 2 g less). The device can be carried in almost any pocket, be it a jacket or trousers, it will not create any inconvenience. The weight will be felt when carried in a shirt pocket. In general, this is an apparatus for a male hand, but it does not cause rejection in women either. In terms of size and weight, the smartphone loses to Windows Mobile smartphones from HTC, such as HTC Typhoon (107.54×46.2×17.5 mm 106.3 g). In numbers, this is not very noticeable, but it is worth putting the devices side by side, and the difference becomes obvious. In fairness, let's say that the comparison is not entirely correct, you need to take into account the presence of WCDMA support.

The five-way joystick is very convenient, it works without any complaints. It is of the same quality as in Nokia 6630, that is, one of the best. On the excellent side, he showed himself in games. Large soft keys are located on the sides of the joystick, their convenience is on top.

The number row of keys is pushed down, the joystick even bumps into the number key "2" a little, because of this, at first you often press "down" instead of the "2" key. Literally on the second day of use, you get used to this feature and forget about it. In general, the keyboard is pleasant to work with, the keys have an average travel, a clear response when pressed. During the day and in good light, the keyboard backlight does not work (there is a light sensor that turns off the backlight as unnecessary). The light gray backlighting of the keys in the dark works well, it is uniform, both Latin and Russian letters are visible.

On the left side we see a voice control button (it is also responsible for the push to talk service). On the right side there is a power button and an expansion slot for RS MMC cards, covered with a metal shutter, hot swapping is naturally supported. Just like the Nokia 6630, the phone only supports dual voltage reduced size Multi Media Cards, since the built-in reader supports only 1.8 V. Over time, we will switch to the commercial name of these cards, and instead of the cumbersome abbreviation DV RS MMC we will use the name MMCmobile (you can read more in this document). Cards of this standard appear in retail sales, now 256 MB cards are already available, 512 MB cards have begun to be sold in some countries of the world.

At the bottom end there is a POP port, standard for Nokia products, and a socket for connecting a charger. Comes with a stereo headset. The sound quality is good even with standard headphones. Cons – low maximum volume level, you can't hear music in the metro, you can't connect your headphones, the output is non-standard. At the top there is an additional speaker, it is quite possible to listen to music through it, the sound is pleasant, it does not wheeze at maximum volume, there are no obvious dips in frequencies.

Display

The resolution and size of the display are standard – 176×208 pixels, 2.13" diagonal (41×35 mm – active area area). The device claims to display 262 thousand colors. In practice, you won't see any difference from the screen of Nokia 3230, which displays 65 thousand colors, similarly to Nokia 6630. The color of the screen remains fashionable and nothing more. Among smartphones without a touch screen, the display is one of the best. We will not compare with the screens of ordinary phones, such a comparison is incorrect. We only note that the resolution of 176×208 pixels is becoming obsolete, we will see a high-resolution screen in the Nokia N90 model and in subsequent products.< /p>

You can manually adjust the brightness of the backlight, five levels are available. In addition, according to the light sensor located above the screen, the system adjusts the backlight automatically (based on the base level, which is set manually).

In idle mode, the screen displays the date and time, as well as the profile name, missed calls and unread messages.

Battery

The removable Li-Ion battery BL-5C has a capacity of 900 mAh. If you disassemble the phone, you can see that the battery of a larger size and capacity could fit in the body of the device, there is an empty space between the back cover and the battery. Claimed battery life – up to 8 days in standby mode, up to 4 hours of talk time.

The phone worked in the Moscow Megafon network for less than 2 days (turned off in the evening of the second day) with 45 minutes of calls in total, 25 pictures with the flash turned off, an hour of work with other functions, Bluetooth turned on. Turning off Bluetooth and the minimum time of working with the phone (15 minutes of talks in total, 20 minutes of games) increases the working time to three days. With 4 hours of MP3 listening and 15 minutes of talk time, the battery lasted a day and a half.

In general, users who talk a lot should expect to charge their phone once a day. With moderate use, the operating time increases to two days. Full charge time is 1 hour 15 minutes. The battery can be called relatively weak, the same HTC Typhoon (I-mate SP3, T-Mobile SDA and others) lasts 3-4 days with similar usage profiles.

There is a standard SIM holder under the battery, it is convenient and does not deserve special attention.

Software

Just like the Nokia 6630, the smartphone is based on the Series 60 second edition platform, the second update package (Series 60 2nd Edition Feature Pack 2, or Series 60 version 2.6) has been used. You can read about all standard Series 60 second edition programs in a separate article on our website. Let us briefly recall from the Nokia 6630 review what the second update package (Feature Pack 2) brings.

The main change lies in the changed version of the operating system, in the second package it is the Symbian 8.0a version. It includes support for inexpensive NAND memory, the manufacturer can decide whether to use it or not.

Extension of standard APIs, in particular, adding interfaces for creating voice recognition applications, 3D applications, more advanced audio capabilities, streaming data encryption. The eighth version also brings new interface design features, windows can be translucent.

Expanded Gallery. This application has been completely updated, now you can view files of all types in one list, automatic sorting has been introduced for mp3 files depending on the file name (taken from the ID3 tag).

RealOne Player – playback can take place not in a reduced window, but in full screen.

The camera allows you to take a series of shots, up to 6 shots at a time. When saving photos, the EXIF format is used, it is also used in conventional digital cameras.

Full DRM support, now images with third party rights cannot be transferred to other devices, they can only be used on the device where they were received or pre-installed.

Basic Imaging Profile – allows devices that support this profile to resize the image before sending via bluetooth, thus achieving high compatibility for phones with different screen resolutions.

Headset profile for bluetooth.

Java – support for accessing calendar data from various applications, 3D graphics, and a number of other improvements.

However, the version used in Nokia 6680 is not exactly Feature Pack 2, but rather an add-on to it. This is an active slider, opening which activates the camera and, the main change, the Active Standby application. This is similar to the Today start screen on Windows smartphones. Everything is quite logical – five icons for quick launch of applications. You can navigate through them with a joystick, you can change the list of these five programs yourself, customize the start screen for yourself. Below is a list of upcoming tasks, tasks (to do). If the player is on, the bottom line displays the name of the song that is currently playing.

Icons have been redrawn, they are nicer, better drawn. You can see it in the screenshots.

The set of pre-installed themes pleases (they are on the map that comes with the kit), they are worked out, the text is always visible, it does not merge with the background.

< img src="https://mobile-review.com/review/image/nokia/6680-1/pic17-16.jpg"/>

And the last thing I want to note is compatibility with third-party programs written for early smartphone models. Of the 12 randomly installed system utilities, only half worked correctly (some did not start at all, some did start, but did not work correctly). Of course, the problem will be solved gradually, with the release of new versions of the programs. When choosing a device, you should not lose sight of this moment.

The Bluetooth implementation is traditionally as functional as possible, all the necessary profiles are supported, including HID (you can connect a wireless keyboard without additional drivers). This is where the smartphone has an advantage over the HTC Typhoon smartphone already mentioned in the review.

Problems of the first deliveries

Most likely, all the problems described in this chapter will be resolved over time, a few months after the start of sales. Just the case when it is worth referring to an article on the problems of buying a new model.

The front panel in the lower part does not fit snugly, a gap is visible, which, however, has decreased over time, but has not disappeared. There is a backlash of the front panel in the lower left corner. Pressing the plastic to the left of the "menu" button pressed that button.

The quality of the body joints is uneven, you can see it on the photo.

Active use of the slider scratches the silver trim around the camera lens.

As for software flaws, they are as follows:

The camera may sometimes not start even after rebooting the smartphone, giving an error. The solution to the problem is to delete the "Images" folder from the memory card. When working with the camera, the device sometimes reboots.

Viewing the available themes without applying them (just browsing and exiting the application) leads to a reboot (not always, the effect was observed only 2-3 times).

Let's assume a situation. From the log of dialed numbers we call, for example, the seventh number from the top. The call fails, the number from the seventh position (after all, the calls are sorted by time) moves to the first, but the cursor position remains at the seventh, that is, we are offered to redial another number.

In general, the device is stable. The described shortcomings during operation are insignificant, but, nevertheless, we hope that they will be fixed in the near future.

Performance

The test of the 3D package SPMark04 did not work on the device, while the system test (System Score) showed only 1183 points, against 1551 for the Nokia 6630. A possible explanation for this is a large color bit depth, which complicates the processing process, which is why the test results are below . The difference in 2D image processing is two times, in other respects Nokia 6680 also lags behind, but not so insignificantly.

The results of the JBenchmark 2 test show the backlog of the smartphone in all respects.

Conclusion

In terms of reception quality, Nokia 6680 is at a high level, it is one of the best. In conditions of unstable reception of the Megafon network in the apartment, when you can talk on average (for example, using Sony Ericsson t630) only at the window, the Nokia smartphone received a signal even in the center of the apartment, you could talk without problems. With good coverage, you won't notice the difference. The call is loud, you will not miss it even on a noisy street. Vibrating alert is medium in strength.

Currently, the Nokia 6680 is the best smartphone without a touch screen, it has no direct competitors. Of the indirect competitors, only HTC Typhoon can be noted, it is smaller, lighter, lasts longer, but its radio part is weaker, Bluetooth implementation is worse. Direct comparison is incorrect – devices are based on different platforms.

It makes no sense to change the Nokia 6630 for a new smartphone. The changes are not so fundamental. Now the price of Nokia 6680 is too high. By mid-summer, the price will drop to $450-470. Sales will be successful, but the announced Nokia N70 will prevent the device from becoming a bestseller, the demand of the most demanding users will shift to this model and other N series smartphones.

The question of choosing between Nokia 6680 and 6681 is not so obvious (reception quality, different kernel version), we advise you to wait for the corresponding review.

WCDMA. The main and most significant change in the second package. Any smartphone with UMTS support will be based on the second package or a higher version. At the same time, Series 60 Feature Pack 2 may be used in a number of products, but the device will not support 3G networks (Nokia 6681/6682 is just such a case).

Circuit Switch ( CS ) Video Call – video call function, everything is quite simple.

Active connections monitor – applications can get information about which connections are currently active in the phone.

Upload files to server – the ability to send files from your phone to a remote server.

Highlight numbers, email addresses, links in messages (SMS, MMS). By selecting the highlighted item, you can save it or perform other actions. At the moment, this implementation is on the Sony Ericsson P900 and other smartphones from Sony Ericsson.

Automatic monitoring of email messages, you can set your own intervals for checking your mailbox. The settings specify the message download option, it can be downloaded as a header, partially (up to the specified number of Kb).

Expanded Gallery. This application has been completely updated, now you can view files of all types in one list, automatic sorting has been introduced for mp3 files depending on the file name (taken from the ID3 tag).

Their differences are in the lack of support for 3G (and all related services) and the front VGA camera, they are designed for markets where third-generation communication is not available and is not planned in the near future. Case colors differ, the difference of 2 g in weight cannot be considered significant, another version of the Symbian core, everything else is the same.

Nokia N90 – new high-resolution screen, but no built-in disk and Wi-Fi. Nokia N70 – no Wi-Fi, no new screen, but compared to the Nokia 6680, a 2 megapixel camera and FM radio have been added.

The Nokia 6680 model is a redesigned version of the Nokia 6630 smartphone, the models are built on the same hardware platform. Those for whom the Nokia 6630 was unacceptable in terms of design will pay attention to the Nokia 6680.

In general, multi-speaking users should expect to charge their phone once a day.

Basic Imaging Profile – allows devices that support this profile to resize the image before sending via bluetooth, this achieves high compatibility for phones with different screen resolutions.

This is where the smartphone has an advantage over the HTC Typhoon already mentioned in the review.

The question of choosing between Nokia 6680 and 6681 is not so obvious (reception quality, different kernel version), we advise you to wait for the corresponding review.
